三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

When we see other people being given presents, we tend to want one ourselves. Birthdays allow people in most cultures a chance to receive gifts on their own special day once a year. At Christmas, on the other hand, some people who are not given presents may feel left out. It is a tricky issue for religious minorities in most Christian countries.
The Netherlands (Holland) provides an interesting example of how people can respond to others' luck. In a weekly lottery, about a third of the Dutch population waits for the one-in-430,000 draw of a winning postcode. All ticket-owners in the lucky area get a cash payment of about 10,000 ($13,000) and one of them receives a car as well. It is like a local Christmas: everyone in the postcode knows that some neighbors have won. A recent study found that the neighbors of winners are more likely to buy a new car within the next six months and might decorate the outside of their house, even though they did not buy a ticket.
Few children get Christmas presents which are worth 10,000 in value. Nevertheless, for a kid, Christmas is equal in value to a Wall Street trader's bonus. The competitive attitude can be almost as strong and obvious. American Jews are a case in point. The festival of lights, Hanukkah, is a relatively minor Jewish holiday, celebrated not long before Christmas. It is sometimes called “Jewish Christmas”, and the holiday season in families with a mixed religious background has been named “Chrismukkah”. Ran Abramitzky, Liran Einav and Oren Righi of Stanford University studied the behavior of Jewish parents in America and found that families with children under 18 celebrate Hanukkah more seriously. The fewer Jews there are in a given county, the more they spend on holiday-related products.
Austrians and Germans with a Turkish background are another example. There is no Muslim holiday close to Christmas. The competitive pressure has instead led some to behave like atheists (people who believe God doesn't exist): they simply celebrate Christmas without its religious meaning. According to EthnOpinion, a Vienna-based market-research institute, almost one in seven Austrians with a Turkish background observes the holiday. “The overall approach is very practical,” says a German-Turkish author and psychologist, Deniz Baspinar. “Even the Christmas tree in Turkish homes is no longer the ironic statement it once was.”

I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for close to four hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, “NEED A JACK(千斤顶).”
Right as I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He sized up the situation and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands in.
I tried to put $20 in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl, their daughter, where they lived, thinking maybe I'd send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches, and then go back home.
After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I'd had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a tamale(玉米粽子). I thanked them again and walked back to my car. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $20 bill! I ran to the van and the guy rolled down his window. He saw the $20 in my hand, started shaking his head smiling, and with what looked like great concentration said in English: “Today you, tomorrow me.” Then he rolled up his window and drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back.
This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.
Since then I've helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn't accept money. But every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank.
40.From the passage we know that ________.

B.Because the man's wife needn't wash her hands.
C.Because the author thought the Mexican family was poor.
D.Because the author thought the man's wife would take it.
42.The Mexican man helped the author because he tended to think that ________.
A.it was completely wrong for others to pass by quietly
B.it was quite easy to help the author mend the Jeep
C.it was possible that everyone might get into trouble
D.the author was a polite stranger and deserved the help
43.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The Mexican family lived a richer life than the author.
B.The Mexican family did seasonal work in Oregon each year.
C.The author was inspired to help others by the Mexican family.
D.What made the writer moved was the tamale given by the girl.

Running like the wind, roaring like thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in South China.
This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund.
The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to southern China. In the 1950's, there were over 4,000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural habitat and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most endangered species.
Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they could not look after themselves.
“Breeding has damaged the quality of the species,” said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.
To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa. Four of them have already arrived. Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts(本能)and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.
“South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in,” said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Center. “We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco-chain(生物链) and there was a lack of space.”The tigers should return to China when the reservations in Fujian are ready.
44.What is the main reason for the South China tiger becoming one of the world's top ten most endangered species?
A.Because it has lost its natural instincts.
B.Because there is not a complete eco-chain.
C.Because there is no space for it.
D.Because uncontrolled hunting has destroyed its natural living conditions.
45.How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on?
A.Its effect still remains to be seen.
B.Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.
C.Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills.
D.The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely.
46.By saying “But they are nothing like their wild cousins”, the writer means that ________.
A.they are no longer feared by other wild animals
B.they don't know how to hunt or kill
C.a complete change has resulted in the species because of breeding
D.to reintroduce them into the wild has become an urgent task
47.Which one is not the reason for South Africa being chosen as the training place?
A.Because the tigers can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.
B.Because South Africans are skilled at dealing with the tigers.
C.Because there is a complete eco-chain and enough space there.
D.Because the country has good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in.

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime (消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
48.According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?
A.Those who often take exercise. B.Those who often watch television.
C.Those who often have meals at home. D.Those who often walk to school.
49.The word “steering” underlined in the last sentence most probably means ________.
A.forcing B.guiding C.driving D.moving
50.The main purpose of the text is to ________.
A.tell a story B.provide facts C.give advice D.compare opinions
51.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.How many children get overweight.
B.Why children get overweight.
C.What is healthy eating.
D.How to prevent children from getting overweight.
E
Most of us have needed help with something at some point in our lives. The old saying “no man is an island” is absolutely true. And where would we be if someone hadn't been there to help us through?
Humans seem to be born with the ability to help one another. The need to survive drives us to be there for one another, even strangers. In the United States, the practice of helping others can be traced back to the country's origins when settlers first arrived on the land. The hardships of the group required each member to look out for the other. By taking care of the group, each person was in effect taking care of himself.
The benefits of helping others can come in different forms. Of course there's recognition. For some, recognition from others is a precious gift, and they need nothing more.
New research indicates that helping others raises quality of life for the helpers themselves. When we volunteer our time to do something for others, such as helping out an elderly neighbour or taking part in a local community project,it can be good news for our health, our children's study and even reduce the local crime rate, too.
Helping others also brings good feelings to the giver and the receiver of the good deeds. Using your special gifts to help others can be a_gift to yourself as you enjoy a self-esteem (自尊心) boost for making others' lives better and the world a better place.
Real happiness is difficult to define and is different for different peoples and cultures, but what is clear is that community and having strong relationships with others are key to achieving happiness.
It's been said that the best way to heal grief or hurt is to help someone else heal theirs. Perhaps in doing so,we find the hope for ourselves.
52.The old saying in the first paragraph tells us that ________.
A.each needs help B.each needs to be independent
C.each must be a helper D.each has life problems
53.The early settlers in the United States ________.
A.naturally developed the ability to overcome hardships
B.learnt to live an independent life quickly
C.had to depend on the help of natives to survive
D.had to live in a group to survive
54.The writer believes that children from a volunteer's family will be more likely to ________.
A.grow physically strong B.receive recognition from others
C.achieve higher grades D.get used to a new school environment
55.What does “a gift” (underlined in Paragraph 5) refer to?
A.A good relationship with others. B.A positive feeling.
C.Praise from others. D.Good health.

When you are in public places, you will see many smokers. And most of them are young people and even middle school students. It is said that in China smokers make up about 45%.
Why do so many people enjoy smoking? Some think it is a pleasure; some believe that it can refresh them. In fact, smoking is a bad habit. It does great harm to our health, not only to the smoker himself, but also to others. For smokers, it is a great waste of money and causes all kinds of diseases. Besides, many fires are caused by careless smokers.
Today, more and more people are beginning to realize the harm of smoking and decide to give it up. In order to keep healthy, we should get rid of the bad habit of smoking. If you are not a smoker, don't start.
