Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket—anything with a round ball, I was useless.” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England’s rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man’s cold-water achievements. Intrigued, Saunders read all he could find about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.
Journeys to the Pole aren’t the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. “John Ridgway was one of the few who didn’t say, ‘You are completely crazy,’”Saunders says.
In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition towards the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a closer encounter(遭遇) with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation.
This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.

IS IT TIME TO GET MP3?
Your computer has been playing music for years, one CD at a time. Now hundreds of songs can be stored in your PC (personal computer) if they’re in the MP3 format.
What is it?
MP3 compresses music into small computer friendly files. You access MP3 music several ways: Music can be downloaded from websites that have converted vast music libraries into MP3. Or you can record CDs into your PC and then convert songs in minutes into MP3. Once MP3 music is on your PC’s hard drive, you can play it through your computer’s speakers, “burn” it onto blank CDs or exchange MP3 files with friends using E-mail.
How much?
Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free. It comes preinstalled on most new computers or can be downloaded from many websites, including WWW.MP3.COM. Some MP3 sites are free. Just type “MP3 sites” into any search engine. The popular MP3 players start at around $50and can hold hundreds of songs. A blank CD on which you can record music costs about a dollar.
Advantages
MP3 turns your home PC into a tape recorder. Tiny MP3 players are the size of a card, making it easy to take hundreds of songs with you.
Disadvantages
You may find that music at many sites is limited. And some only allow you to listen rather than download offerings. Others let you download music that then can’t be copied to MP3 players. And a growing number of new CDs make it impossible to copy songs to a computer.
51. How can you get MP3 music?
A. By turning your home PC into a tape recorder B. By taking your own music or songs with you
C. By copying songs to a PC through the speakers.
D. By downloading from websites which have converted music libraries into MP3.
52. Which is NOT true to the passage?
A. Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free of charge.
B. MP3 music is a kind of computer file.
C. MP3 music can be downloaded for free at any site.
D. You can make MP3 music with your computer.
53. The underlined word “burn” probably means_____.
A. fire B. record C. download D. play
54. How much will you pay for a MP3 player?
A. Free of charge. B. Free downloading. C. At least fifty dollars. D. About a dollar.
55. The writer’s main purpose is to_______.
A. encourage people to buy MP3 B. show us how to play MP3
C. introduce how to made MP3 D. tell us something about MP3

Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager’s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.
“The safety issue is a big one,” says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked: what about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer — “That’s not a problem here.” — Mahoney began to feel uneasy.
“No crime whatever?” comments Mahoney today. “I just don’t buy it.” Nor should he. In 1999 the U.S. Department of Education had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. “Parents need to understand that times have changed since they went to colleges,” says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation.”
But getting accurate information isn’t easy. Colleges must report crime statistics (统计数字) by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. “The truth may not always be obvious,” warns S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc. the nation’s leading campus safety watchdog group.
To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions.
56. The Mahoneys visited quite a few colleges last August ______.
A. to express the opinions of many parents B. to choose a right one for their daughter
C. to check the cost of college education D. to find a right one near a large city
57. It is often difficult to get correct information on campus crime because some colleges ______.
A. receive too many visitors B. mirror the rest of the nation
C. hide the truth of campus crime D. have too many watchdog groups
58. The underlined word “buy” in the third paragraph means ______.
A. mind B. admit C. believe D. expect
59. We learn from the text that “the honest ones” in the fourth paragraph most probably refers to colleges ______.
A. that are protected by campus security B. that report campus crimes by law
C. that are free from campus crime D. that enjoy very good publicity
60. What is the text mainly about?
A. Exact campus crime statistics. B. Crimes on or around campuses.
C. Effective solutions to campus crime. D. concerns about kids’ campus safety.

Students should think now about what extracurricular (课外的) activities they'd like to participate in. Participating in extracurricular activities may help you deepen your physical, creative, social, political, and career interests by bringing you into communication with other like-minded people you didn’t previously know.
You can join groups as a way to get support from other students. A club or group can also be a great way to meet people who are different from you. Lots of youth programs bring people together with those who are different as a way to break down the barriers between people.
Participating in extracurricular activities helps you in other ways, too. It looks good on college and job applications and shows admissions officers and employers you're well-rounded and responsible. Specific activities help with specific goals.
The most basic reason for joining a club or team is that it gives you something better to do than staring at the wall, wandering the hall, or sleeping all afternoon. People who are participating are less likely to pick up bad habits, like smoking or drinking.

写作2.
The author (The passage) discussed the benefit of extracurricular activities including being a way to improve students’ health, widen their social circle and introduce them to new ideas and people. (30 words)
Our school offers many different kinds of after-school activities. These include sports, music and drama. I’m one of the members of drama club. I think it is very important for students to participate in extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities can improve our social life, introducing us to new people outside our class or school. In addition, they can reduce the stress and pressure we experience as the result of our studies. Also, they can bring us a lot of enjoyment. If we feel fresh and relaxed we can study better, so they will also be good for our grades. Thus, in my view, if we focus too much on any one thing, either study or after-school activities will be negatively affected. But with the right balance both can improve. (128 words)
